About

A writer who reports, and a journalist who imagines

TopeLizbeth is the creative and media brand of Tope Stephen — Nigerian writer, journalist, broadcaster, media executive, entrepreneur and storyteller.

The work begins with a refusal: that African life should arrive to readers flattened, summarised, or explained by someone passing through. Across fiction and journalism, Tope Stephen writes the continent from inside it — its comedy and its cruelty, its bureaucracy, its faith, its markets, its families and its enormous appetite for argument.

The fiction runs in three directions. Lagos satire, sharp enough to sting the people it recognises. Fantasy, where power, bloodline and obligation are turned into worlds with their own rules. And contemporary novels about women who are asked to be several things at once.

The journalism and the broadcasting sit beside it, not beneath it. In-Depth Africa exists because some stories cannot be told in ninety seconds, and because the people inside them deserve to speak for longer than a quote.

Biography

Tope Stephen is a Nigerian writer, broadcaster, journalist, storyteller, cultural commentator and entrepreneur whose work sits at the intersection of media, literature and African storytelling.

Her career began in broadcasting, where she developed extensive experience as a radio presenter, producer and voice-over artist before moving into programming, station management and editorial leadership. Those years behind the microphone shaped her understanding of audiences, storytelling, programming and the power of media to influence how people understand themselves and the world around them.

She holds a National Diploma in Mass Communication from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and studied Mass Communication at Lead City University, Ibadan, where she graduated among the institution’s top-performing students. She later pursued an MBA at Beijing Normal University, China, extending her academic and professional interests into business, management and strategy.

As a writer, Tope creates fiction about people trapped by systems larger than themselves, often examining power, morality, identity, womanhood, memory and the price of compromise. Her literary work moves across contemporary African satire, stories about women, family and inheritance, and supernatural fiction, forming the foundation of the TopeLizbeth literary universe.

Beyond fiction, she is the founder and editorial lead of In-Depth Africa, an independent editorial and documentary platform built around a simple conviction: Africa is not one story. The platform explores the continent through country-focused investigations, history, politics, culture, economics and human stories, seeking to challenge simplified narratives while preserving the complexity and memory of African life.

Her work across writing, journalism, broadcasting and enterprise is guided by a simple philosophy: Tell the truth. Build worlds. Ask difficult questions. Preserve memory. Leave Africa more deeply understood than you found it.

Four strands, one body of work

The writing, the reporting, the broadcast and the build

Fiction

Satire that bites, fantasy that builds worlds, and contemporary stories about women, family and inheritance.

Journalism

Reporting and long-form writing on African people, politics, society and ideas — context before conclusion.

Broadcasting

Presenting, interviewing and producing: the same stories carried in voice and picture.

Enterprise

Ventures built with the same instinct as the writing — make the thing, and make it well.
